Become a Responsible Coastal Yoga Teacher

Beach Yoga Certification
Teaching Beyond the Studio. Protecting the Places We Practice.
Every year, thousands of people roll out a towel on the beach and experience yoga for the very first time.
For many, practicing outdoors feels less intimidating than walking into a yoga studio. The ocean naturally invites us to slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect with ourselves. As teachers, we have the privilege of introducing people to yoga in one of the most beautiful classrooms on Earth.
That privilege comes with responsibility.
Teaching beach yoga is far more than moving a class from a studio onto the sand. Outdoor environments require a different skill set. Wind, tides, unstable surfaces, heat, wildlife, accessibility, group management, and constantly changing conditions all influence how we teach safely and effectively.
A responsible coastal yoga teacher understands that every decision—from where to place students to how a class is sequenced—can impact both student safety and the environment around us.
Why I Created the Beach Yoga Certification
After teaching beach yoga on Tybee Island since 2013, I've learned that no two classes are ever the same.
I've taught through changing tides, shifting weather, sea turtle nesting seasons, migrating shorebirds, high winds, extreme summer heat, chilly winter mornings, destination retreats, private events, and community classes with hundreds of different students.
Those experiences inspired me to create a certification that prepares yoga teachers to confidently guide outdoor classes while protecting both their students and the coastal environments they love.
This isn't simply a continuing education course.
It's an opportunity to learn from real-world experience developed over more than a decade of teaching on the beach.
What You'll Learn
Our 15-hour Yoga Alliance Continuing Education (YACEP) certification explores:
Teaching safely on sand and other natural surfaces
Reading weather, tides, and environmental conditions
Sequencing for outdoor classes
Modifications for beginners and mixed-level groups
Voice projection and group management without studio walls
Risk management and liability considerations
Beach permits and business logistics
Creating memorable beach yoga experiences
Coastal stewardship and Leave No Trace principles
Teaching Beyond the Studio
One of the greatest lessons the beach has taught me is that we are guests in nature.
As yoga teachers, we have an opportunity to educate our students about protecting the beautiful places where we practice. Respecting dunes, giving nesting sea turtles and shorebirds space, minimizing our impact, and leaving every beach better than we found it are all part of responsible outdoor teaching.
Teaching beyond the studio. Protecting the places we practice.
That philosophy is woven throughout this certification because great beach yoga teachers don't just lead beautiful classes—they become ambassadors for the coastal communities they serve.
Our conservation work doesn't stop when class ends. Since 2019, Tybee Yoga & Healing Arts has proudly participated in Georgia's Adopt-A-Beach Program by caring for Mermaid Point. Stewardship is part of our practice, both on and off the mat.
I'd love for you to see what that looks like in action.
